Who is this Casper Sleep Element Mattress recommended for?

Let’s start with a quick breakdown of people who will benefit the most by using the Casper Sleep Element mattress. This is a somewhat firm mattress with a two-layer construction. The top layer is made of AirScape foam which is a proprietary foam designed for cooling. The bottom layer is made of memory foam. So in essence it is a complete foam mattress.

Recommended for

Given its construction and medium firmness, the Casper Sleep Element is best suited for the following types of sleepers.

Back Sleepers

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers generally want a mattress that is firm enough to help with spinal alignment yet soft enough to be comfortable for their shoulders and hips. The Casper Sleep Element fulfills these requirements when it comes to average-weight back sleepers. Its top layer is softer than its core which helps you stay comfy. The firmer core supports your body to help keep your spine straight.

Here is a review from “Spooky” on the Amazon page for this mattress. Spooky speaks of their experience of not having a sore back after switching to this mattress from a soft memory foam mattress. Here are their exact words:

I was lucky enough to get it on a prime day, so far I’ve had it almost a month and unlike my old mattress it’s not sinkable soft, but sitting or laying in a mattress like that also caused back pain for me. I haven’t woken up sore since getting this mattress.

While the reviewer does not explicitly say that they are a back sleeper we can assume they are because mattresses only help with back problems if you are a back sleeper.

Side Sleepers

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers require a mattress that lets their hips and shoulders sink a little bit so that their spine doesn’t bend sideways. Typically all-foam mattresses are the best for side sleepers. However, if the mattress is too soft, then it will sink too much which may cause discomfort.

The Casper Sleep Element sports a medium firmness that does not pose this problem. As such side sleepers of average or light weight will find it comfortable to sleep in.

Customers on Amazon have good things to say about this mattress with respect to side-sleeping.

Gerry Sullivan says:

Firm enough with a soft inch or two on top. Good for side sleeping. A good value.

And john l. says the following:

Great support on hips, lower back, and shoulders. I am a side sleeper and my wife is a back sleeper…we both find it to be super comfortable.

Succinct and to the point, these five-star reviews tell us that this mattress is comfy for side-sleeping.

Not Recommended for

While the Casper Sleep Element is a great choice for most people, it does have its caveats. It cannot cater to all types of people. As such it is not recommended for the following people.

Stomach Sleepers

stomach sleepers

People who like to sleep on their stomachs may find that their core sinks just a tiny bit too much into the mattress. This usually happens with people who weigh more. Lighter people (around 130 pounds or less) will have no issues sleeping on their stomachs with the Casper Sleep Element.

But people who weigh more than that and prefer sleeping on their stomachs should not use it. They can try out some of the other options by Casper instead.

Heavy Sleepers

People who weigh higher than average will not enjoy sleeping on Casper Sleep Element. The all-foam construction is not firm enough to prevent excessive sinkage into the mattress. This can cause issues like poor sleeping posture and result in various kinds of aches and pains.

If you belong in this category, you should check out some of Casper’s firmer variants to see what fits your needs.

How is the Casper Sleep Element Mattress Designed/Constructed?

The Casper Sleep Element is a dual-layer, all-foam mattress. This much has been mentioned before. But let’s take a deeper look into it.

The top layer is 3 inches thick. It is made of a special polyfoam called AirScape. AirScape is a proprietary foam developed by Casper. This layer provides a comfortable surface to lie on. One of the main benefits of AirScape is its cooling. This polyfoam has perforations to make it more breathable. This helps the sleeper to avoid sweating too much and for hot air to escape. If you are a sleeper who has issues with heat, you may want to look into this mattress.

Casper Sleep Element Mattress Review - The construction

The other advantage is its bounciness. Lightweight sleepers will find it quite soft and comfy to lie on. This soft bouncy layer lets the mattress contour around the hips and shoulders thereby making it a perfect choice for side sleeping posture.

The second layer is made of more firm material. That’s why it is called the support layer. This layer prevents people from sinking into the mattress. This firmness is what helps with spine alignment for back sleepers.

The combined height of both these layers is 10 inches. This means that the support layer is 7 inches thick. Perhaps this is why heavy sleepers have issues with the support and firmness of this mattress. However, that’s not a specific issue of this mattress, but rather all foam mattresses. In fact, 10 inches is the standard height for most mattresses in this price range.

What are the Features of Casper Sleep Element Mattress?

Now, we will discuss the features available in the Casper Sleep Element mattress.

Motion Isolation/Transfer

One of the most important features that customers like to see in a mattress is its motion transfer index. This is primarily a concern for people who share their bed with a pet or partner. Motion transfer is the measure of how much movement a person lying still on the mattress can feel when the other person is moving around.

Foam mattresses are inherently good at motion isolation. Meaning that they transfer minimal movement. According to my personal experience of using this mattress, the motion isolation is quite good. You will not feel the other person tossing or turning during sleep. In fact, all movements such as sitting up or sitting down on the mattress will be unnoticeable. Short of jumping wildly you won’t feel much of anything.

Here is a review to show you that this is indeed the case. This is from a reviewer called “Summery”. They describe their experience with the phrase

“Easiest delivery and set up ever, sleeping like royalty”.

However, the most important part of their review is this;

Every time I climb onto the mattress I am amazed at the complete lack of movement across the rest of the bed. I am no longer bothered by my husband’s movement during the night, nor do I feel I am disturbing him when I am restless or get in and out of bed.

Pressure Relief and Back Support

The top AirScape layer is much softer in comparison to the support layer. This softness lends itself to great pressure relieving when lying down. I found that sleeping on my back on this mattress greatly relieved the strain on my shoulders (for reference I am a tall–6 ft, 158-pound man). The pressure around your hips is also greatly eased when sleeping on your back on the Casper Sleep Element.

The medium-firm build of this mattress supports the back when sleeping so that you don’t wake up sore. Here is a review from “RayaMama” on Amazon, who has used this mattress for 2 years, that corroborates these claims.

This user review tells us that the Casper Sleep Element is firm enough to support your back, and soft enough to relieve pressure in a side-sleeping position. Their exact words were as follows:

This mattress supports my back (important so that I don’t wake up sore!) and yet it still has a softness to it. If I lay on my side, the mattress gives enough for my shoulder to be comfortable.

However, these benefits are limited to light and average-weight sleepers. If you are too heavy (approximately 250 pounds or higher) then you will sink right through to the support layer. As a result, you won’t be able to take advantage of the soft AirScape foam layer.

Edge Support

Foam mattresses typically do not have good edge support. Fortunately, the Casper Sleep Element is much better than other foam mattresses when it comes to edge support. It does not have a reinforced perimeter. So what support it offers is based solely on the medium firm support layer.

What this means is that light and average-weight sleepers will be able to use the entire surface area of the bed for lying. They won’t have to scoot to the center to feel the most firmness. The only point where I felt that the edge support was lacking a bit was when I tried to use it as a support to get up. It does not hold up when you put your entire body’s weight on one arm but that much is expected of foam mattresses. So don’t worry about it.

Temperature Regulation

The Casper Sleep Element is much better than standard foam mattresses when it comes to temperature regulation. The main reason for this is the perforations in the AirScape layer. AirScape is already pretty good at temperature regulation, but with the extra perforations, its cooling goes to the next level.

An Amazon review by the user Kim Garrett says the following about the cooling and comfort of the Casper Sleep Element.

“I bought this mattress for my daughter’s guest room so I would have a decent bed when I come stay with her. I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it it. Not too firm, not too soft and doesn’t sleep too hot. Great value!”

Of course, the cooling levels do not reach the levels of latex or hybrid models of mattresses but if you are a hot sleeper and insist on using a foam mattress, then this is an excellent choice.

Testing Casper Sleep Element Mattress with Different Weights and Sleeping Positions

Features and construction of a mattress are important, but nothing quite gives more practical information than real tests. As such I tested this mattress with different people who fell into various weight categories. I had these people try out the mattress in various sleeping positions and tell me their experiences in detail. So, here are my findings.

Light Weight Sleepers in all three positions

Since this is an all-foam mattress, it performs very well for light sleepers. The top layer makes for a comfortable surface to lie in without feeling like you are sinking into the mattress. The layer has enough bounciness to support light sleepers.

As the experience can vary with sleeping positions I tested for all three positions as well. Here are the results. For the record, light sleepers are those who weigh 130 pounds or less.

Light Weight Side Sleepers

Light-side sleepers will be comfortable in the Casper Sleep Element. The AirScape foam will confirm just enough to not make you feel like the mattress is wrapping around you. It lets your shoulders and hips settle down so that your spine stays in a neutral position. This is very important for a comfortable sleep.

The feedback from the participants corroborated these observations. So the Casper Sleep Element mattress is great for light side sleepers.

Light Weight Back Sleepers

Back sleepers have similar requirements as side sleepers in that their shoulders and core should sink just enough to keep their spine in a neutral position. They also require somewhat soft mattresses that can relieve pressure on the shoulders and the hips.

The dual-layer construction of the Casper Sleep Element is great at pressure relieving as we saw before. So the response for this test was very positive. All participants provided great feedback about pressure relief and overall comfort.

Light Weight Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers want a mattress that does not sink around their midsection. For light stomach sleepers, the Casper Sleep Element provides adequate support so that they can have a comfortable sleep.

Rest assured you will not be complaining about an aching neck or stiff back if you sleep on your stomach. Stomach sleepers also suffer from heat retention, which we have already seen is not an issue with the Casper Sleep Element due to its perforated top layer.

Average Weight Sleepers in all three positions

The results are quite similar to those of light sleepers. That’s because this mattress is designed to cater to people in this weight class. But we will take a look at all three sleeping positions and their results anyway.

For this test, we are considering average weight as less than 240 pounds but higher than 130 pounds.

Average Weight Side Sleepers

Average-weight side sleepers who are closer to the lower limit will find that the Casper Sleep Element provides great pressure relief. However, the closer you approach the upper limit, the less effective it becomes.

However, it never gets so bad that you have to think about changing sleeping positions, or the entire mattress for that matter.

Average Weight Back Sleepers

Back sleepers of average weight should have no problems with this mattress. This mattress has the right firmness to make average-weight sleepers not fall into the mattress. It provides good support for their back by contouring along it (thanks to the AirScape layer).

There are no spine alignment issues when sleeping on the back. The pressure on the shoulders, neck, and hips/waist is also evenly distributed so that it never becomes painful.

Average Weight Stomach Sleepers

For average-weight stomach sleepers, this mattress does not provide adequate support. When sleeping on your stomach, the sides of your pelvis dig too deep into the soft layer. As a result, this slightly misaligns the hips from the rest of the body.

This position can become painful and uncomfortable if held for long. So, average-weight stomach sleepers should either change their sleeping pose or check out Casper’s firmer offerings.

Delve into the insights provided in the Casper Mattress Review for a comprehensive understanding of this mattress.

Heavy Weight Sleepers in all three positions

From my experience (well the experience of my friends and family), this mattress is not suited for people who weigh 250 pounds or higher. The fact of the matter is that all foam mattresses are not great at supporting such high weights. Hybrid mattresses and spring mattresses are better suited for heavier people. Nevertheless, we still tested this mattress with heavier people, and here’s what we found.

Heavy Weight Side Sleepers

Side sleeping is a position that puts a lot of pressure on the mattress. Good mattresses for side sleeping are those that can relieve pressure on the shoulder and the pelvis. However, if they are too firm, then it throws the spine out of alignment. But if they are too soft, they let the sleeper sink too deep which is also uncomfortable.

Sadly, when heavy sleepers use the Casper Sleep Element for side sleeping, they face the latter. This also contributes to more heat retention. As such, I do not recommend heavy sleepers to lie sideways on this bed.

Heavy Weight Back Sleepers

If you are a back sleeper and heavy, then you can actually make this mattress work for you. One of the advantages of back sleeping is that pressure from your body is spread out evenly over the mattress. This prevents excessive sinking.

That said, a heavy sleeper will still compress the soft top layer and will feel the firm support layer more easily than other weight classes. But this is only true for people who are closer to 250 pounds. If you are significantly heavier then you should look for a firmer mattress.

Heavy Weight Stomach Sleepers

Heavy stomach sleepers will not find this mattress to be comfortable. This all-foam mattress is too soft to reliably provide support in the stomach sleeping position. According to my tests, the hips sink too low even in the support layer which makes it uncomfortable to sleep in this position.

My advice to heavy stomach sleepers is to try out Casper’s other mattresses such as the Nova and Hybrid.

Ease of Use and Customer Service/Support of the Casper Sleep Element Mattress

How easy is it to Unbox and off gas

Casper is a renowned mattress-in-a-box company. So the Casper Element comes in a neat little package. You just have to move it on the bed where you want it and then open it. Just make sure there is enough room for the mattress to unfold and let it expand.

There will be a chemical smell which will take a day or two to clear out depending on the ventilation of your room.

This has also been the experience of others based on Amazon reviews such as the following. Amazon customer Greg Burckle had this to say about the off-gassing of the Casper Sleep Element.

“Reasonably easy to remove from the box. 2 persons needed to unpack, remove plastic, and position on bed springs. No noticeable odor. Expanded quickly. Medium firm but soft top. Fits bed springs and bed frame perfectly.”

That’s a great review highlighting the ease with which you can unbox and off-gas this mattress.

Where can you buy it?

The Casper Sleep Element can be bought on Amazon, the Casper website, or walk-in stores such as Target or Walmart.

Delivery and Return

Casper can be shipped anywhere in North America (USA and Canada) that can be reached by road for free. Island states require an extra fee for delivery. Delivery usually takes 3 to 9 business days and is done by UPS.

If you want to return a Casper mattress for any reason, you can fully refund it by submitting a request through email, through their website, or through customer support. Casper will either send someone to retrieve the mattress or you will have to drop it off at a UPS center.

Other customers have had good experiences with returning and getting a replacement for defective products, as can be seen in the following review by a mister C.Kay.

“One of two mattresses we purchased experienced “failure to launch.” But Casper was very quick to remove the defective mattress and install its replacement.”

They didn’t say how quick they were, but given that most people think a week is too long, we can assume it was under that time limit.

Trial Period

There is a 100-night trial period. You can refund the mattress if you do not like it as long as this 100-day limit is not crossed. This trial period is provided because it can take up to 30 days to get used to a new mattress.
