Who is this Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid Mattress recommended for?

Before we can begin the review, here is a quick breakdown of which kind of people are recommended or not recommended to buy this mattress.

Recommended for

Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid Mattress is really great for the following types of people.

Lightweight sleepers

Lightweight sleepers need a plush mattress if they want to experience a “hugging” mattress. Due to their lightweight such sleepers cannot experience “hugging” in most mattresses. But the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid can provide it.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need a soft mattress that can let their shoulders and hips sink into the mattress so that the spine remains straight. Normally, a stiff mattress would not let the shoulders sink, since shoulders are broader than hips, the spine has to curve to accommodate this position. With the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress that is not a problem since its plushness lets the shoulders sink.

Thin, Low-body fat people

Thin people have really sharp pressure points because they don’t have enough fat to cushion them. Thus, they require plush mattresses that can give relief to those points. Firm mattresses do not provide this level of pressure relief to people with sharp pressure points.

Not Recommended for

The Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid Mattress is not recommended for the following types of sleepers.

Heavy People

Plush mattresses are not for heavy people. So, if you weigh more than 230 pounds, you should look for a firm mattress as it can provide the support that your body needs. In a medium mattress, heavy people will sink too much which results in a bad posture.

People with a Limited Budget

The Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress is a pricey model and it has quite a niche audience as well. So, people who are on a limited budget should avoid this mattress as there is a chance that it won’t fit their needs.

How is the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid Mattress Designed/Constructed?

Construction of Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid Mattress

Now we will take a look at the construction of the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress. This mattress has a firmness scale of 5 which means it is a true medium mattress. It is made up of four layers. Three are comfort layers and one is a support layer. We will start with the top and take a look at each one and see what function they perform.

The first layer is made of Casper’s AirScape memory foam. This layer is quite thin and soft. It has a lot of holes/perforations in it whose purpose is to let trapped hot air escape. Just this much does not provide a lot of cooling, but you will still feel a little bit cooler compared to non-perforated mattresses.

The second layer is also made of AirScape. So, it also has perforations. The purpose is the same; letting trapped hot air escape. However, there is one major difference between the first and second layers. The second layer has variable firmness. The middle (vertical middle, parallel to horizontal borders) part of this layer is firmer than the top and bottom.

The middle part is where the hips and lower back lie, so they get more support from this firm zone. The shoulders and feet require more plushness for pressure relief, so the softer zones provide that. That’s why this layer is also called the “zoned support layer”, even though it is a comfort layer.

The third layer is another zoned memory foam layer. It is called “Zoned Support Pro”. It does not have any perforations in it, but it does have contoured cuts. These are basically small slits in the mattress in three different zones. These cuts fall under the shoulders, hips, and feet. The cuts that fall under the hips are firmer while the others are softer. This layer basically reinforces the effects of the second layer.

The fourth and final layer is made of pocketed coiled springs set inside a highly dense foam layer. Its edge is made of extra firm foam for providing immaculate edge support. The springs in this layer provide multiple benefits. They provide great support for the sleeper and prevent them from excessive sinking. Due to the pocketing, they also provide great motion isolation.

All these layers are neatly wrapped in a great mattress cover. Now, that we discussed these, let’s check out the features of the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress.

What are the Features of the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid Mattress?

Here are the features of the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress that arise as a result of its construction.

Motion Isolation and Transfer

Motion isolation is the ability of a mattress to absorb vibrations caused by physical motions. The quicker it can absorb them, the less distance they travel and the less chances of them disturbing anyone sleeping on the mattress. How well a mattress can isolate motion determines whether it is a good fit for couples and people who share their bed with their kids or pets.

The Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress is great at motion isolation. Typically plush mattresses are inherently good at motion isolation because soft foam can absorb vibrations well. This is further supplemented by the pocketed coils. As such there is little to no motion transfer for regular disturbances such as:

  • Tossing and turning,
  • Sitting down or getting up,
  • And adjusting the pillow.

We tested this out with a light sleeper and had them lie on the end of the bed, while an average-weight person (130-230 lbs) sat down, lay down, and got up again. The tester barely felt the motions and was not disturbed. Of course, aggressive motions like jumping and throwing heavy things on the mattress will be felt, but let’s be honest, they are not going to happen when everyone is asleep.

Here is a review from Amazon customer E.Burton, who echoes these thoughts.

“I got this mattress to replace an old inner spring mattress. This mattress is so much better! The first thing noticed was that when one person moves on the mattress, the other person doesn’t feel a thing.”

Cooling and Temperature Regulation

While the cooling may not be as good as the Snow mattresses by Casper, it is nothing to scoff at either. The two perforated AirScape layers do an adequate job of letting heat escape and prevent you from getting hotter than you already are.

Normally, memory foam is not good at letting heat escape. It traps hot air and that makes the sleeper even hotter. However, the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid is designed such that air does not stay inside it. The perforations in the AirScape layers and the slits in the zoned support pro layer enable the hot air to escape thereby preventing the sleeper from getting hotter than they already are. And that’s really everything that you need, not getting hotter.

This is further corroborated by this review from Amazon Customer JTB who describes the mattress as “Cool and Comfortable”.

“We were very happy with our previous mattress which was the older spring style. Unfortunately nothing lasts forever. When looking for a new mattress, we decided we should give the new style a try. This mattress is very comfortable. The zones are a nice feature. People use to say that memory foam is very hot. It’s been around 95 degrees here lately. Obviously we have the air conditioning on but it’s still a bit warm. The mattress has not added to the heat in any way. I can’t speak to how long it will last but it seems well made. I would recommend the mattress to family if they were in the market.”

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is the ability of a mattress to distribute the sleeper’s weight evenly and not apply extra pressure on certain areas. Firm mattresses are typically bad at pressure relief while plush and soft mattresses are great at it.

As a plush mattress, the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid is naturally very good at relieving pressure. That’s because its soft comfort layers contour around the body and that helps reduce the force around common contact areas such as the shoulders and hips. The three foam layers of this mattress snugly hold the sleeper without making it feel as if they are trapped in it. This helps reduce aches and pain in these areas and lets the sleeper have a comfortable rest.

Here is a five-star review from Oliver D Ward, an Amazon customer who recounts his experience with pressure relief and back pain.

“Side sleeper. The first mattress I’ve had that didn’t leave me with some kind of back pain. I can finally sleep in again! Honestly wasn’t sure about it the first two weeks, was still having shoulder, upper back pain from side sleeping. But after a month I was waking up with no pain. Now my only problem is showing up to work on time! Definitely try it out at least 30 days before giving up on it, I think you’ll be satisfied with your purchase.”

They round off their review with a sweet “Buying a second one!” as well.

Edge Support

Edge support is a mattress’s edge’s ability to stay upright and not give way under pressure. Typically, foam mattresses are bad at providing edge support because foam is soft. However, the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress has a reinforced perimeter around its spring coil layer. This perimeter is quite firm and does not give way when you put pressure on it.

We tested this feature out and what we found was that if you sit on the edges, you will sink and reach the reinforced edge, but you won’t sink below that. As for lying down, you can easily sleep near the edge without fear of falling because less pressure is being applied to the end in the lying down position.

Here is a review by Yomo (an Amazon customer) who says “It’s worth it” and provides the following details.

“I like that it’s reinforced on the sides so it doesn’t collapse when you sit on edge of bed. Ergonomic design—I have a bad back that needs this. Great for recuperating from medical problems. Love this mattress!”

Testing Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid Mattress with Different Weights and Sleeping Positions

Now, we are going to go over the various sleeping positions and weight classes and how the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress performs in each of them. Let’s start with lightweight sleepers.

Light Weight Sleepers in all three positions

Lightweight sleepers are people who weigh under 130 pounds. Such people typically require soft mattresses as they have a lot of pressure points and need a plush, pressure-relieving mattress. As such, the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress is a great fit for them and performs well beyond expectations.

Lightweight Sleeper in Side Sleeping Posture

Side sleepers require a plush mattress that can contour around them and let their shoulders sink into the mattress to keep the spine relatively straight. Since this mattress is so plush, even lightweight sleepers can sink into it and get the benefits of pressure relief and good sleeping posture. I would recommend this mattress for strict side sleepers as it is so good.

Lightweight Sleeper in Back Sleeping Posture

Lightweight back sleepers will find that this mattress provides great support to their back and hips. It also gently cushions their sharp pressure points like their shoulder blades and provides comfort. The zoned support and zoned support pro layers provide great cushioning as well as adequate support for lightweight back sleepers. As such I highly recommend this mattress to strict back sleepers.

Lightweight Sleeper in Stomach Sleeping Posture

Stomach sleepers typically require a firm mattress to provide support to their midsection. Even though this is a plush mattress, due to the zoned support layers there is enough support in the midsection to prevent the hips of lightweight sleepers from sinking. As such this mattress is great at providing relaxation and support to lightweight stomach sleepers.

Overall, this mattress is great for lightweight sleepers as they get to avail of all its benefits and none of the drawbacks.

Average Weight Sleepers in all three positions

Average-weight sleepers are categorized as people weighing in the 130 to 230-pound range. Since this is a range, the experience of people on the lower end and higher end can differ significantly. If you are part of such people, you should basically check out the other weight class tests rather than this one.

Average-weight Sleepers in Side Sleeping Posture

Side sleeping for the average Joe is a charm on this mattress. They will get the same level of comfort as lightweight side sleepers because their weight allows the mattress to contour around them and provide adequate cushioning and pressure relief. There is no issue with tacoing as the mattress has enough bounce to prevent that. So, the average-weight side sleeper will have a great rest on the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid.

Average-weight Sleepers in Back Sleeping Posture

Back sleeping for the average-weight person is amazing on the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid because the zoned support layers keep the back and hips propped up for neutral spinal alignment. The softer zones under the shoulder and feet provide great pressure relief. In this position the average-weight sleeper will not be hot, sunk too much, or feel pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. So, it is a great sleeping position.

Average-weight Sleepers in Stomach Sleeping Posture

Unfortunately, stomach sleeping is not that great for average-weight people. The mattress is too plush to support their midsection in this position. They can stay in this position for small amounts of time, but I would not recommend it to strict stomach sleepers. This matter becomes worse the higher your weight goes near the upper limit.

Heavy Weight Sleepers in all three positions

Heavy-weight people are those who weigh more than 230 pounds. Heavy-weight sleepers require extremely firm mattresses because they need extra support. Since the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress is a plush mattress, it is too soft to properly support such people. Therefore, there are no positions in which this mattress performs well for this weight class.

Heavy-weight Sleepers in Side Sleeping Posture

In this position, the heavy-weight sleeper sinks right down to the spring layer. The mattress tacos around them and it can make them feel trapped. Since the support is lacking, their spine does not remain in the neutral position, so, sleeping on this mattress will cause back pains. I do not recommend heavyweight side sleepers to use this mattress.

Heavy-weight Sleepers in Back Sleeping Posture

This position fares much better than side sleeping as there is less tacoing and less sinking. Unfortunately, there still is not enough support especially under the lumbar and the pelvis because foam does not have the strength to uphold more than 230 pounds. As such, extended sleep sessions will result in discomfort. So, I cannot recommend this mattress to heavyweight back sleepers.

Heavy-weight Sleepers in Stomach Sleeping Posture

Just like the other positions, this position also suffers from a lack of support due to the increased weight. It is not recommended that heavyweight stomach sleepers use this mattress, as they might develop aches and pains due to incorrect posture.

Ease of Use and Customer Service/Support of the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid Mattress

A good product is not defined by just its features but also by the customer service surrounding it. Thankfully, Casper mattresses have great warranties and performance. Let’s take a look at all of them.

Unboxing and Off Gassing

The mattress comes rolled and wrapped in two plastic layers which are encapsulated in a box. In this state, it can be easily carried by two people. To unbox it simply carry it to the room where it is required, put it on the bed where it will be placed, and remove the plastic coverings. As soon as air makes contact with the mattress, it will start inflating and taking shape. Give it a few hours to regain its full form.

During this process, a chemical smell will be released. This smell will go away in a few hours if the room is well-ventilated. It may take a few days for the smell to go away if the ventilation is bad. However, reviews suggest that the smell may not always be there. Here is a small excerpt of a review from “Britt”, an Amazon customer who recounts their experience of unpacking and off-gassing the Casper Sleep Nova Hybrid mattress.

“Super cozy and soft to just lay in and I had no issues with getting it setup- and there’s no weird smell

There is a 100-night trial period. During this period you can return the mattress if it does not suit you or you don’t like it. However, you can only do so after 30 nights have passed.
