Who is this Casper Mattress recommended for?

Here is a quick breakdown of the ideal customer for this mattress. Given that it is completely made of foam and does not have any kind of additional support (i.e., coils and springs) only a select audience will be able to benefit from it. Read this section before you go further into this review to avoid wasting time.

Casper Mattress is Recommended for

The Casper Mattress is recommended for the following people.

Back Sleepers

People who sleep on their backs will find the Casper to be a comfortable mattress that provides adequate support and comfort. The softer top layer conforms to the sleeper’s body and reduces pressure on the shoulders and neck. This helps relieve back pain.

Side Sleepers

People who strictly sleep on their sides will find the Casper to be a great mattress. The all-foam construction and soft top layer conform to the body and allow the shoulders and hips to sink into the mattress. This sinkage relieves pressure and keeps the spine in a neutral position, thereby preventing back issues.

Lightweight Sleepers

People who weigh less than 130 pounds will really enjoy this mattress as it can support them in all positions and provide comfort.

People Who Want to Furnish Their Guest Room

People who frequently have guests at their house and want an affordable yet comfy mattress should invest in the Casper. This mattress is great for dealing with most body and weight types in the short term.

Not Recommended for

The following types of people should not use the Casper mattress.

Stomach Sleepers

People who sleep on their stomachs will find that the all-foam construction is not supportive enough for sleeping on their stomachs. In this position, the hips tend to sink too much and all-foam mattresses are not that great at providing support for the hips. So, extended rest in that position becomes uncomfortable.

Heavy Sleepers

People who weigh more than 230 pounds will not be able to find the support they need from this mattress. Heavy people need reinforced mattresses and the Casper is not reinforced. Its only support is its firm bottom layer which is just not enough. So, heavy sleepers should check out different mattresses by Casper that have supporting coils.

How Casper Mattress is Designed/Constructed?

Casper Mattress Review

The Casper is made of three layers of foam and encased in a cozy knit cover. It is a medium-firm mattress and 10 inches thick. The top layer is made of Casper’s proprietary AirScape foam. It is basically a breathable soft layer that has many perforations in it that allow heat to escape. This soft layer keeps the mattress from getting too hot and lets you enjoy a cool and comfy sleep.

The second layer is made of premium memory foam that helps you stay comfortable throughout the night. Memory foam has the ability to distribute body weight across its surface which helps alleviate pressure on the body. The Casper uses memory foam that is CertiPUR-US® certified. According to the Casper website:

“The foams have been tested for low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).”

It is good to know that Casper is doing their part when it comes to the health of their customer.

Finally, the last layer is made of a firm foam that Casper has dubbed “ProSupport Foam”. It is designed to prevent people from sinking into the mattress. These three layers combined form the entire mattress and provide the other benefits and features that we are going to discuss now.

What are the Features of the Casper Mattress?

These are the features of the Casper Mattress that enable it to provide comfort and support for the intended types of sleepers.

Motion Isolation/Transfer

All-foam mattresses are very good at motion isolation. Foam is very absorbent, so it is able to isolate vibrations very well. Instead of letting them transfer unabated throughout, it stifles them near the point of origin.

Of course, depending on the range of motion and the magnitude of the vibrations some disturbance might be noticeable. I tested out the motion isolation of this mattress by having people lie on one side of the mattress while I did the following things on the other side:

  • Sit on the bed
  • Toss and turn
  • Jump out of/into the bed

The answers were varied, but there was a definite pattern; sitting, tossing, and turning were either not felt or barely felt. On the other hand, aggressive motions like jumping were felt to varying degrees. Suffice it to say, that you won’t be waking up in the middle of the night due to your partner tossing and turning, or getting up to get a glass of water.

Pressure Relief

Foam mattresses are great at relieving pressure. But in the case of The Casper, this ability is taken a step further due to the presence of the second memory foam layer. Memory foam as you know has the ability to distribute weight across its surface evenly.

The definition of pressure is the “force acting per unit area”. Since weight is a downward force and it is being distributed evenly across a large surface area, the force acting per unit area is reduced, thereby reducing pressure.

What that means is that if you have aching shoulders, a stiff neck, or a hurting pelvis, then lying on your back on this mattress will provide comfort to these aching areas by relieving pressure.

Previous customers also agree about this as can be seen from the following reviews.

Luis M, an Amazon customer had this to say about this mattress.

“Your back will thank you!”

And

“I’m a fan of firm mattresses and this hit a perfect balance for me of firm support while having plenty of soft cushion and comfort. I wake up now with much less back and neck pain and it’s only been a few nights – the relief was immediate!”

Edge Support

Foam mattresses traditionally do not have great edge support because foam is soft and gives way under pressure quite easily. But The Casper is a bit of an anomaly as it provides passable edge support without even using reinforced edges.

The secret lies in the bottom-most support layer. The layer made from ProSupport foam is quite firm. It is there to prevent sagging and sinking. This firmness results in better-than-average edge support.

The support is enough for people to sit on the edge without sinking. Another advantage is that makes the users feel that the entire surface of the mattress is available to them, so they can even sleep near the edges.

Here is a review by Kim from Amazon that sheds some light on the edge support feature of this mattress.

“It has a fast response rate and the edge support is better than most memory foam mattresses. It’s a great mattress for couples too because I don’t feel like I’m falling into my partner”

Temperature Regulation

Memory foam is usually bad at staying cool. But this is not an issue with The Casper. If you remember, the top layer is made of AirScape. This layer has a lot of perforations/holes in it that allow hot air to escape (hence the name AirScape).

So, if you are a hot sleeper who needs to stay cool, then try this mattress. It will work wonders for you.

Casper Mattress test on different Weights and Sleeping Positions

Now, before we begin, I just want you to know, that The Casper is designed for light (<130 pounds) and average-weight (130-230 pounds) people in mind. That’s why it performs well for those weight classes. However, heavier people will not find this mattress to be comfortable in the long run.

With that said, let’s see how this mattress performs for all weight classes in all three sleeping positions.

Light Weight Sleepers in all three positions

Lightweight sleepers will be comfortable in this mattress no matter their sleeping posture.

Light Weight Side Sleepers

Strict-side sleepers will find this mattress to be a good fit for them. Side sleepers need just a little bit of sinkage to keep their spine in a neutral position. They require that their hips and shoulders sink into the mattress which helps their spine stay straight instead of bending sideways.

As we mentioned previously, the top layer is quite soft, it even conforms around lightweight people. So, it does not matter if you are a strict slide sleeper or a combination sleeper, you will have a good sleep on this mattress.

Light Weight Back Sleepers

Lightweight back sleepers will find this mattress to be the definition of bliss. Light sleepers typically have the problem that mattresses do not conform to their body because they need more weight.

However, the top AirScape layer is quite soft and bouncy. It conforms even around lightweight people thus providing them the comforts they need. This bounciness and softness combine to provide great support to the back and shoulders. The spine remains in a neutral position which helps to relieve pain.

Light Weight Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers have the opposite problem of back and side sleepers. They need no sinkage around their midsection (hips). If the hips sink too much then their spine gets bent. Sleeping too long in this position can result in back pains.

Thankfully, that’s not a problem in The Casper. The second comfort layer provides enough support for lightweight people to keep their hips from sinking excessively. Since the top layer lets all parts of your body sink the same amount, there is no risk of bad spinal alignment.

Average Weight Sleepers in all three positions

As part of the intended audience for this mattress, average-weight people will have comfort in all three sleeping positions.

Average Weight Side Sleepers

Average-weight side-sleepers will also have a comfortable sleep in The Casper. In the side sleeping position, the shoulders and hips exert more pressure on the mattress than normal. This helps them to sink into the comfort layers which keeps their spinal alignment straight.

The point of a good sleep is to wake up well-rested. By keeping the spine straight i.e., neutral, you won’t wake up with a sore or hurting back.

Average Weight Back Sleepers

Average-weight sleepers will enjoy sleeping on their backs on this mattress. The top layer might not support their weight entirely, but that’s what the second memory foam layer is for. They will find that there is no excessive sinkage and that their shoulders and back feel comfortable.

This review by Joe O. sheds some light on this:

“The Casper mattress queen size is a very quality mattress that has a lot to offer and one of the best mattresses I ever had. It comes with Casper’s Signature ProSupport that prevents you from sinking into the mattress and the Premium memory foam conforms to your body to absorb pressure.

I’m getting such a great sleep with this mattress and wake up so refreshed every morning.

I recommend this Casper mattress if you’re looking for a good quality mattress.”

The mattress conforms to their body and provides comfort. Due to AirScape, the mattress will not get hot, so back sleepers can enjoy their rest without having to take excessive measures to stay cool.

Average Weight Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers won’t have much problem with their position. Average-weight sleepers will get the support they need from the two comfort layers. As you know, stomach sleepers need to prevent their mid-section from sinking. The tri-layer design aids that function (i.e., not letting the mid-section sink) and lets stomach sleepers have a good night’s sleep.

Heavy Weight Sleepers in all three positions

As part of the audience not intended for this mattress, heavy-weight sleepers will have some issues with this mattress.

Heavy Weight Side Sleepers

Heavy-weight back sleepers who weigh close to 230 pounds will have a nice rest on this mattress. They may sink right down to the support layer but they will have the support required to relieve pressure on their shoulders and back.

However, the farther you move away from the 230-pound weight cut-off the less support you will get.

Heavy Weight Back Sleepers

Heavy-weight back sleepers who weigh close to 230 pounds will have a nice rest on this mattress. They may sink right down to the support layer but they will have the support required to relieve pressure on their shoulders and back.

However, the farther you move away from the 230-pound weight cut-off the less support you will get.

Heavy Weight Stomach Sleepers

The Casper Mattress is not suitable for heavy-weight stomach sleepers because it cannot provide the support required to prevent their midsection from sinking too deep. The position coupled with heavy weight puts too much pressure on the mattress to support effectively.

Heavy-weight sleepers should try out the Casper hybrid mattresses that have more support for higher weights.

Ease of Use and Customer Service/Support of the Casper Mattress

Casper is a great company that has been making mattresses in a box since 2014. Part of their success is due to their customer support and how they put ease of use before anything else.

Let’s see how these things have been handled for The Casper mattress.

How easy is it to Unbox and off gas

Unboxing and off-gassing The Casper is easy. It comes in a box that is four feet tall. Inside the box, the mattress is all rolled up and covered in two layers of plastic. To unpack the mattress, simply take the box to the room where the mattress will be used and cut the plastic away.

The mattress will start inflating and it should gain its shape in a matter of minutes. But to be on the safe side, I would give it a couple of hours before actually lying in it.

As the mattress has a layer made from polyurethane it will give off a chemical smell which should clear away in a matter of hours or 2 days, depending on the ventilation. If you are sensitive to smells, I recommend that you unpack the mattress in a highly ventilated area and then move it into your room after the smell has dissipated.

Here is a review by Luis M, that sheds some light on this.

“The mattress itself comes compressed in a box and you can easily unroll it and open it from its compressed packaging on your bed frame or box spring. All this is very easy and quick. Also, once you cut into the wrapping, the mattress inflates almost instantly. I had heard mixed comments about needing to wait 24 hours before being able to use it – but that is not my experience nor is it the verbiage that comes with the mattress (mentions you can use it right away). We did give it about 6-8 hours to off-gas some of the smells that come with it – they’re not bad but figured it was the right thing to do.”
